Beschrijving
Dirk Douma is een zoon van de smid/schaatsenmaker Johannes Hielkes Douma uit IJlst. Tussen 1875 en 1879 verblijft hij in IJlst, daarna gaat hij waarschijnlijk als smidsknecht naar Wolvega. Tussen 1883 en 1887 is hij werkzaam in IJlst in de oude smederij van Thomas Faber aan de Popmawâl 9. In 1887 vestigt hij zich als zelfstandig smid en schaatsenmaker in Uitwellingerga.
