Gerrit van der Lely komt in december 1869 naar Zoeterwoude (Weipoort), waar hij zich vestigt als smid op de hoek van de Weipoortse Weg en de Nieuwe Weg. Hij maakt er schaatsen van het ZH-Friese type.
