Zoon van timmerman Otte Thomas Schuurmans (IJlst, 1801 - IJlst, 1877).. Mark Ottes Schuurmans wordt smid, eerst in Oudega, vanaf circa 1865 in Heeg. Enkele maanden voor zijn overlijden in juli 1902 worden bij boelgoed smidsgereedschappen en ijzerwerk verkocht. In de Leeuwarder Courant van 29 april 1902 behoren ook 'schaatsijzers' tot de de te verkopen inventaris.
